Consider these non-alcoholic drink alternatives for your next Swiss meal

Whether meeting friends, after-work networking or connecting with the local community, a glass of something alcoholic is part and parcel of many cultures. And here in Switzerland, it is undoubtedly the case. There is the Apero, carb-loaded meals and after-dinner drinks that all are paired with alcoholic beverages.

But what are your options if you want something non-alcoholic to drink?

I started my alcohol-free journey four years ago and struggled to find elegant alternatives to alcohol that tasted comparable to the real deal.

So in 2021 I decided to take matters into my own hands. Curating an exclusive range of healthy non-alcoholic beverages that champion sustainability, taste great and would make everyone part of the party.

While I’m not advocating swearing off alcohol altogether – moderation is my mantra – I am passionate about an inclusive alternative to the standard water and orange juice option.

It’s taken me two years to find the pleasure of that first glass of champagne in an alcohol-free alternative. I’ve searched bars, supermarkets, and restaurants. I’ve drank more elderflower cordial, grape juice, and sparkling tea than you can shake a mint leaf at.

So whether you (or your guests) are pregnant, the designated driver or just don’t want to drink at all (who even needs a reason not to drink alcohol, right!), here is a list of simple alcohol-free beverages to try.

I’ve paired them with typical Swiss food experiences, so you can offer or enjoy a non-alcoholic option, whatever the occasion.

Rebels 0.0% SPRITZ Alternative for a Swiss Apero

The Swiss love to gather for an afternoon or early evening apéro, a chance to meet with friends, family, or work colleagues to unwind over a cocktail (or two) and a few snacks. Often accompanied by a “plättli” of saline treats such as mountain cheese or dried and cured hams and meats.

So instead of the much-loved Aperol Spritz, swap it for Rebels 0.0% SPRITZ alternative or double-distilled spirit alternatives. Made with organic botanicals here in Switzerland, this vegan and low-in-sugar option is an excellent alternative for that wind-down hour.

Noughty alcohol-free organic sparkling Rosé with Pasta or Risotto

Being a lover of all things rice and pasta, finding a non-alcoholic wine accompaniment was essential. So when I now enjoy a traditional Ticino “Saffron Risotto” or any rice or pasta dish, my go-to is the Noughty alcohol-free organic sparkling Rosé by Thomson & Scott. Noughty wines are hands down the best non-alcoholic alternatives I’ve ever tasted. It even encouraged me to start my business VE Refinery.

This 0% sparkling Rosé is gently de-alcoholised with zero compromises on flavour or style. Well balanced with a touch of sweetness it’s a great accompaniment to a rich and creamy risotto. It’s also certified organic, vegan and halal. And being low in sugar and calories also aligns with my health, fitness, and well-being goals.

Riegel IPA Liberis 2+3 Beer with a BBQ

If BBQ season or a hearty stew is not complete without a beer, why not try one of the many non-alcoholic options?

I find Farmy a great place to pick up unique and thoughtfully crafted local treats. Amstein, the “Beer Ambassador”, also has a premium selection to please even the most sophisticated pallet. From top-fermented pale ales to amber ales, stouts and dry porters, the beer industry is leading the way in delicious and comparable tasting non-alcoholic alternatives to their alcoholic staples. The strong delicious Riegel IPA Liberis 2+3 is a good match for a cooked cut which brings out the malty backbone of the beer.

Nought Organic Sparkling Chardonnay with a Swiss Brunch

What about the Sunday brunch, I hear you ask? Well, there’s a whole world of alcohol-free breakfast or brunch beverages to enjoy with your Zopf or Swiss Bircher Muesli.

My suggestion is for an elegant yet easy alcohol-free mimosa. Simply fill your favourite glassware half full with fresh organic juice (with pulp is my preference) and top it up with your choice of alcohol-free sparkling wine. My go to is Noughty Organic Sparkling Chardonnay with crisp and ripe apple notes. Don’t forget to garnish with an orange slice!

Obsthof Retter Juices with Dessert

Consider pairing your Bündner Nusstorte, Zuger Kirschtorte (made with alcohol-free Kirsch, of course!) or any other sweet treat with an organic fresh pressed juice.

Leading the way in fine juice pairings is Obsthof Retter. Their selection is free from added sugar and widely available at Swiss wine merchants and online stores. An insider tip: their wild dark cherry juice is simply divine!

Whatever your alcohol-free preference, be it from time to time or more long term, I hope that you, as I, are increasingly delighted by the non-alcoholic alternatives finding their way onto the Swiss table.
