What to Wear in Switzerland in April and May

Deciding what to wear in Switzerland in April and May is tricky, even for us locals. One day can feel like 20°C and brilliant sunshine, the next day swing back to cold or even snow. Layers are still the secret, just with fewer heavy items than winter. Spring mornings are often crisp (around 1-5°C), warming up during the day. In the sun you’ll feel comfortable, but shade, wind off the lake or a mountain outing can make it feel instantly colder. After 25 years of Swiss spring, I’ve learned that layers are still the secret – just with fewer heavy items than winer.

Person with raincoat on in April rain in Switzerland Quick Answer

  • Light base layer (t-shirt or long-sleeve) + mid layer (cardigan/jumper)
  • Outer layer you can pack away (ultralight down, soft-shell, rain jacket)
  • Closed walking shoes with grip (water-proof a bonus)
  • A thin scarf and a light hat for mornings
  • Sunglasses (don’t forget!)

In this guide, you will learn quickly that dressing in Swiss spring is often taking two, sometimes three, seasons into account.

What to Wear each Month

Switzerland in March: what to wear

March is still more winter than spring in Switzerland, especially in the mountains. Temperatures sit between 2-10°C, and snow is still possible even in the cities. The mountains are firmly in winter mode – ski season is still going strong (till about Easter depending on snow) Dress as you would for late winter: layers, a proper jacket and waterproof shoes. For winter packing advice, see my winter guide. By late March, when the clocks move to summer time, days become noticeably longer and it slowly starts to warm up.

Switzerland in April: what to wear

April’s weather is the classic “four seasons in one day” kind, so plan for cold mornings, possible rain and the possibility it could snow. Don’t worry, it doesn’t stick around too long. I run warm, so I’ve ditched the merino wool base layer by now, but if you run cold, you may find it necessary.

April Packing Essentials

      • Long-pants/trousers: jeans, thicker cotton pants are great. But not yet linen or gauze.
      • Long-sleeve top + one lighter-blouse/shirt
      • Mid-Layer: A not too thick cardigan or thin jumper is a must. A sports fleece jacket works also for those who like it a little more casual.  Thin cashmere are great for this season.
      • Ultra-light down jacket: especially for early April and mountain trips. The great thing about ultra-light down jackets is that they roll up small so are great for travelling. This is the one I love, but the ones from UNIQLO are great too.
      • Rain Jacket: April is notorious for rain. As the Swiss say: “April rain brings May flowers!” I personally prefer a raincoat over an umbrella, especially when travelling, so my hands are free for photo taking, map searching and coffee holding.
      • Trainers/walking shoes: Good walking shoes with good tread are a must- water-proof, even better. I love my ON water-proof trainers, they are easy to slip on. Only negative is the stones that sometimes get stuck in the sole.
      • Thin scarf for the mornings
      • Sunglasses

Switzerland in May: what to wear

May usually feels lighter and more “spring-like”, but evenings can still cool quickly. The mountains are always colder than the cities, so you’ll still need an extra layer up there. As we move into late spring, the my summer guide comes in handy.

What changes in May

      • You can start to swap to lighter tops and tshirts
      • You may finally reach the “no socks” shoe phase (my favourite!)
      • Dresses start appearing more

May packing Essentials

      • Light-short sleeve tops/tshirts, matched with a cardigan or jumper
      • Light jacket for the evenings
      • Trainers, and if you are lucky, the first day of loafers/ballerinas
      • Keep a rain layer in your bag just in case.

Footwear for April and May

City Walking Shoes

At this time of year you still want closed-toe, water-resistant shoes with good tread when visiting cities such as Lucerne, Lugano and Zurich. Cobbledstoned old towns can be slippery in the rain, and you will be walking a lot.

Hiking Mountain Shoes

If you plan to spend any time out of the cities, proper footwear matters. You may get away with trekking shoes on stable trails, but if you ‘re tackling rocky or uneven paths, hiking boots with ankle support are a must. Note: it’s still too early for most high-altitude hiking – paths above 800m may still have snow.

Can I wear sneakers in April?

Yes! Sneakers can work in April with the one caveat … are you prepared to get wet feet if it rains? The ideal spring sneaker is water-resistant and has a good tread.

Accessories Locals Actually Use

  • Spring Hat: While most of us adults have put away the warm hats for the winter, a light spring woollen or cotton hat is a good idea for the younger members of your family. If you are planning on heading up one of the mountains that are open during spring, a hat (as well as gloves) is highly recommended. Visitors are often surprised at the temperature difference at altitude – even in spring, there will be snow.
  • Scarf: I find scarves to be good travelling companions, useful in many situations and in spring they definitely have their place. The mornings are chilly, so your neck will welcome a thin, cotton scarf. But be prepared to stow the scarf in your bag after lunch on a very warm day.
  • Sunglasses: It’s this time of year that I always seem to forget my sunglasses. But with the sun finally shining bright, you will be very pleased that I reminded you to bring yours along!
ATTENTION: Most mountains destinations are closed in April and early May. Spring is that weird season in the mountains where things aren’t always open. Before you even book your flights or train tickets, make sure your path is snow free and the mountain transportation is operational.
